Motorcycle Insurance in Florida

Do You Really Need Motorcycle Insurance?

Florida doesn’t require insurance just to register a motorcycle, which is why so many riders assume it’s optional. But the state’s financial responsibility law applies the moment you’re in an at-fault accident, and riders 21 and over need $10,000 in medical benefits coverage to ride without a helmet.

Here’s the detail that surprises most riders: Florida’s required PIP coverage doesn’t apply to motorcycles. If you’re hurt on your bike, your medical bills aren’t automatically covered the way they would be in your car.

Required and wise are different questions. One uninsured crash can reach everything you own, and a properly built policy keeps a bad day on the road from becoming a bad year.

What a Motorcycle Policy Covers

  • Liability: bodily injury and property damage you cause to others.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: your injuries when the at-fault driver has little or no coverage.
  • Medical payments: fills the gap PIP leaves for riders.
  • Comprehensive & collision: theft, storm, fire and crash damage to your bike.
  • Custom parts & accessories: exhaust, paint, bags and chrome scheduled at real value.
  • Riding gear: helmets, jackets and apparel, depending on the carrier.

The Four Layers

The Coverage Most Gulf Coast Riders Build On

Most motorcycle policies come together in four layers. Here’s what each one does, and why skipping one usually costs more later.

01

Liability

Pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. Many riders carry the same limits they carry on their car.

02

Your Own Health

Medical payments and uninsured motorist coverage close the gap PIP leaves when you’re hurt on the bike.

03

Your Bike

Comprehensive and collision cover theft, storms and crashes, with custom parts scheduled at their real value.

04

Higher Limits

A personal umbrella sits above your motorcycle, auto and home policies when a serious claim exceeds them.

The Basics

How can I get a motorcycle insurance quote?

Call either office or request a free quote online. Have your bike’s year, make, model and VIN handy, along with your license information. A local agent will compare carriers and get back to you within one business day.

Do I have to buy from you if I get a free quote?

No. Quotes are free with no obligation. If your current coverage turns out to be the better deal, we’ll tell you.

Is motorcycle insurance required in Florida?

Florida doesn’t require insurance just to register a motorcycle, which fools a lot of riders. But the financial responsibility law applies the moment you’re in an at-fault accident, and one uninsured mistake can reach everything you own. Required and wise are different questions; we’d never let a friend ride bare.

How do I find the best coverage at the lowest rate?

That’s exactly what an independent agency is for. We shop multiple carriers side by side to find the most complete coverage at the best available price, then explain the differences in plain language so you can choose with confidence.

Riding in Florida

Florida-Specific Questions

Why doesn’t my PIP cover me on the bike?

Florida’s PIP statute excludes motorcycles. The no-fault medical coverage that follows you in your car stops at the kickstand. Medical payments coverage and uninsured motorist protection are how riders close that gap, and they’re the two lines we check first on every motorcycle quote.

Can I ride without a helmet in Florida?

Riders 21 and over may ride without a helmet in Florida if they carry at least $10,000 in medical benefits coverage. Riders under 21 must wear one. Either way, take a close look at medical payments coverage, since PIP won’t pay your bills after a crash on the bike.

Why does uninsured motorist coverage matter so much for riders?

Plenty of Florida drivers carry minimal coverage or none at all, and riders are far more likely to be hurt in a crash than the driver who hit them. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver can’t.

Does my policy cover a passenger?

It depends on the policy. Guest passenger liability is automatic with some carriers and optional with others, and medical coverage for your passenger varies the same way. If you ever ride two-up, tell us and we’ll make sure the person on the back seat is as protected as the one in front.

Your Bike & Gear

Bike, Parts & Gear

Does my policy cover aftermarket add-ons?

Base policies typically include only a small allowance for accessories, often $1,000 to $3,000. If your exhaust, paint, bags and chrome are worth more than that, they need to be scheduled at their real value, or a total loss pays factory-stock money for a bike that was anything but.

What about my helmet and riding gear?

Many policies include some coverage for helmets, jackets and riding apparel, but the limits, and whether theft is covered, vary by carrier. If your gear represents a real investment, ask us to show you exactly how each quote treats it.

What if my bike is stolen or damaged in a storm?

That’s comprehensive coverage. It protects against theft, fire, falling objects and storm damage, whether the bike is on the road or parked in the garage. On the Gulf Coast, it’s the coverage we’d keep active year-round.

Saving Money

Rates & Discounts

Are there discounts for motorcycle coverage?

Many of the same discounts that apply to auto insurance apply to motorcycles. Bundling your bike with auto or home coverage, keeping a clean record, and completing a rider safety course can all help. Your bike’s make, model and age also affect your rate, so call us before you buy and we’ll compare quotes on the bikes you’re considering.

Am I eligible for a first-accident waiver?

Some carriers offer first-accident waivers to riders with otherwise clean records. Ask us about it when we start shopping coverage for you, and we’ll point out which options include it.

I only ride part of the year. Can my rate reflect that?

Yes. Lay-up periods reduce or suspend road coverages during your storage months while keeping comprehensive active, so the bike stays protected against theft, fire and storm damage in the garage. Tell us your honest riding season and we’ll structure it.

Should I carry higher liability limits?

Often, yes. Liability limits protect you if you’re found at fault in an accident, and Florida’s minimums rarely cover a serious one. Many riders carry the same liability limits on their bike that they carry on their car.

Can I lower my premium by changing my deductible or how I pay?

Usually. A higher deductible lowers your premium, and paying a full six-month term up front often costs a little less than paying monthly. We’ll show you the tradeoff so you choose a deductible you can comfortably cover.
